Rooted in Community Focused on Family
The Far Southeast Family Strengthening Collaborative (FSFSC) is an independent, nonprofit organization committed to empowering families and strengthening communities across Washington, D.C.
While our work began in Ward 8—where our roots and relationships run deep—our programs and partnerships now reach residents citywide, reflecting our belief that every family deserves access to opportunity, stability, and care.

Our History
Far Southeast Family Strengthening Collaborative (FSFSC) was formally established in April 1996 through a Neighborhood Collaborative Capacity Grant made possible through the federal Family Preservation and Support Act.
During its first years, FSFSC worked to further develop its governance, administrative and service delivery infrastructure; conducted a series of info-gatherings designed to educate the community about child abuse and neglect, implemented a small grant program (the Mini-Grant Program), and provided family support services. FSFSC serves all of Ward 8, and since its inception, has located its principal office in the Anacostia Professional Building, 2041 Martin Luther King, Jr. Avenue, SE, Washington, DC.
FSFSC is organized as a partnership of residents, agencies, government bodies, and institutions located in and/or doing business in the southeast community.
FSFSC is a member of the citywide Healthy Families Thriving Communities Collaboratives, a network of all the Collaboratives, and a member in good standing of the joint policy body, the Collaborative Council.
FSFSC envisioned a service delivery system that was neighborhood-based and family-driven. This system was formed through a series of networks of support that was both flexible and responsive to the needs of children and families.
Our Core Values
- All children need and deserve stable and healthy families.
- All families need a safe neighborhood and supportive community in which to live.
- Children and families need educational, occupational, and economic opportunities.
- Civic pride and community vitality can be fostered through the participation of residents in community affairs.

Building a Permanent Home in Anacostia
In 2012, the Far Southeast Family Strengthening Collaborative began an ambitious journey—to transform a long-vacant building on Martin Luther King Jr. Avenue SE into a vibrant, 20,000 square-foot headquarters serving the community.
The organization purchased a former bowling alley, Masonic lodge, and furniture store, reimagining it into a space that would provide lasting value to the community it has served for more than two decades. After years of planning and support from board members, staff, community activists, business leaders, philanthropists, and government partners, that vision became a reality in Historic Anacostia.
The first floor now offers new opportunities for Ward 8 residents, featuring a full-service Busboys and Poets restaurant, bookstore, and additional retail space. Beyond construction jobs, the location is expected to create approximately 100 long-term employment opportunities for local residents.
The second and newly constructed third floors house more than 70 FSFSC employees, enabling the organization to expand its programming and continue strengthening families for years to come.
A $14.6 Million Investment in Community
This state-of-the-art facility was made possible through District gap funding, including a $3 million mayoral grant, $8 million in revenue bonds from the Office of the Deputy Mayor for Planning and Economic Development, and more than $2 million from the DC Property Assessed Clean Energy (PACE) program.
This innovative project is the first in the nation to combine PACE financing with tax-exempt funding—reducing energy costs and making sustainable development more accessible for nonprofit organizations.
Groundbreaking
In 2012, the Far Southeast Family Strengthening Collaborative set out on an ambitious journey: to redevelop a vacant building on the 2300 block of Martin Luther King Jr. Avenue, SE into a 20,000 square-foot facility for FSFSC’s new offices.
We purchased the former bowling alley / Masonic lodge / furniture store and began the hard work of activating a space that would serve as our permanent headquarters and bring much-needed amenities to the community we've serve for over 20 years.
Real Stories. Lasting Impact.

"FSFSC’s youth programs gave me purpose. I found mentors, built confidence, and even helped lead a community event. They believed in me when I didn’t believe in myself."
