Program Description:
The overriding goals of the Boys and Men Project are: 1) to promote healthier human functioning among African American Men and Boys through social-emotional development, 2) to increase the positive life functioning of African-American Men and Boys, 3) to support the positive development of African American Men and Boys through the provision of social and therapeutic services, character education, and life management training, 4) to equip those who work with this population, with effective intervention strategies, 5) to establish an Information Clearinghouse that disseminates information and provides crucial linkages to community services. The underlying suppositions of these goals are: 1. The FSFSC believes that most African-American men have prevailed over the obstacles and experience relative success in life. 2. Therapeutic self-examination promotes positive mental health. 3. Positive mental health creates the possibility of more effective life management. 4. Increased life management skills promotes healthy human relationships. 5. Information and education can help human beings negotiate life more effectively. 6. Case management provides crucial linkages to the much-needed resources. The specific services that are currently provided are: parent skill training, life skill training, fatherhood training, and supportive case management. |
